Located geographically in a strategic location Siliguri in the center of North East Corridor is well connected to the rest of India
by roadways, railways and airways.
Siliguri is having its own airport, bus terminus and railway station. Bagdogra airport / Tenzing Norgay bus terminus / New Jalpaiguri railway station / Siliguri Junction and Siliguri Town Station are the communication hub. Flight, Train, Buses and private car are available to travel to Darjeeling, Gangtok, Jorethang, Pelling, Kalimpong along with North Eastern States like Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, etc. and neighbouring countries like Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, and Bangladesh etc. The Royal Government of Bhutan also operates buses from Siliguri to the Bhutanese capital Thimpu.
Airways - Bagdogra international Airport (IXB) is half an hour’s drive from Siliguri and is approximately 15 kilometers. Indian, Jet Airways, Kingfisher, Spice Jet, Druk Airways and Air Deccan are the few major carriers that fly to Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Guwahati on regular basis. Bagdogra Airport is the closest airport to serve Sikkim, Darjeeling, Pelling, Dooars and Kalimpong. Even the border town of Bhutan and Nepal is served by this airport.
Railways – There are three important railway stations which is rare occurrence for any city in the world especially for the reason that there are all the gauges of train tracks i.e. narrow gauge, meter gauge and broad gauge are still in operation. Trains connect Siliguri with almost all the major cities of the country. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a steam / Diesel railway service is UNESCO World Heritage Site starts from NJP. Since 1890 runs the steam engine hauled passenger service from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling up to a height of 2,134 meters / 7000 feet is also a crowd puller.
1. New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) – New Jalpaiguri station is situated on the outskirt of the city. It is approximately 10 Kilometers from the center of the Town and is twenty minutes drive. It is well connected to New Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and the rest of the country. NJP is directly connected with all major stations in North East India and with Chalsa, Malbazar,Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and Rajabhatkhawa i.e. stations in Dooars. Darjeeling, Kurseong and Ghoom in Darjeeling hills.
2. Siliguri Junction Station – Situated in the heart of the city and operational from 1949 used to be the point of departure of all trains to the north - eastern states, till the broad gauge was extended to Dibrugarh in Assam. Siliguri Junction is perhaps the only station in the whole of the world with all three types of railway tracks i.e. broad, meter and narrow gauge i.e. all the three gauges of tracks still exist here and are in operation.
3. Siliguri Town Station – Operational from August 1880 under the East India Company Rule this town station is a history by itself. Proposal to modernize and will be declared as a historical station. This station used to be the junction for the trains coming from Kolkata. It is also the starting point for the world heritage train (UNESCO) famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway for journey to Darjeeling. It is one of the oldest stations in India.
Roadways – National Highway 31 passes through the town of Siliguri connecting Siliguri to the rest of India and the states of North East of India. National highway 31 A connects Sikkim and national highway 55 Connects Darjeeling both originates at Siliguri. The East –West Corridor Four lane Expressway is under construction and will passes through Siliguri.This is the nodal point to connecting neighboring countries like Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. The Royal Government of Bhutan also operates buses from Siliguri to Bhutan.
